Birthing Preparation

Preparing for birth isn’t about writing strict plans, wearing a flowy gown and expecting everything to go to schedule . Real preparation means learning about the process and what to expect, what affects the process, how you can manage things, how you can encourage progress, common problems and easy solutions. It means figuring out what you are really ok with and what you really want to avoid. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more you can work towards having the birth that you want. Being as prepared as possible can have a hugely positive impact on your whole family.

1 in 3 Australian women experience trauma from a birth. The statistics aren’t as clear regarding partners, but it is known that many partners also experience trauma if they are not well informed, well prepared and know how to positively contribute to the process. Preparation isn’t just about natural birth, it is also required for a caesarean birth. There are many options available throughout the caesarean process and most people are unaware of how these things can impact each member of the family.

When all participants are well informed and feel prepared, they know where the mother is up to in the journey, what things can help her, what she really wants and how to advocate for that.

Birth isn’t simply a physical process, it is a full transformation. It is the journey to becoming parents (whether that is for the first time, or parents to this particular child) and can be the most empowering, magical experience of a woman’s life. The birth greatly impacts your feelings about parenthood, your bond with your child, your relationship with your partner, and can also have a profound effect on both parent’s mental health. Thoughts and emotions greatly impact the release of hormones in the process, so getting both parents into the best headspace allows you the best chance of a wonderful birth. Figuring out what your fears are, what your partner’s fears are, if there are any mental/emotional blocks, and addressing these allows you to enter the birthing process free and clear. Instead of fear and dread, clients go into birth feeling empowered and excited.

Having a personalised session allows an in depth exploration into your views of birth, an understanding of what you already know and what you need to know, and leaves you feeling calm and armed with knowledge that you know will assist you, your partner and support person to feel in control, ready and better prepared for this momentous event.

Private sessions at Mornington Counselling are for the mother, partner and one support person (optional). The sessions are held in Mornington at Thrive Wellness Collective and are run by Tammie- a nurse, midwife, childbirth educator and counsellor. You will receive a session booklet that contains loads of helpful information and A Modern Woman’s Guide to a Natural Empowering Birth book (if you are expecting to have a natural birth).

If you have experienced previous births and would like to have a different experience this time, these private sessions are perfect for you.

Weekend sessions available upon request. Fill out contact form with date and time preference and I will be in contact ($430 a session).
